How did I develop Sciatica?!

Sciatica is a common condition with many contributing factors, but with one true underlying cause. You commonly hear that sciatica develops because of tight muscles of the low back. True in par,t but why did the muscles tighten and imbalance set-in in the first place? More common than not, it boils down to the loss of a low back curve, which in turn stretches and irritates the roots of the sciatic nerve as they branch off the spinal cord. As those nerve roots get irritated over time the musculature around the area, one, start to guard to protect the underlying structures, and two, the neurological irritation itself stimulates the muscles to fire at a higher frequency.  At DeMoulin Family Chiropractic, located in Wheaton, IL, we approach sciatica at the cause, focusing on relieving the neurological irritation at the root. Typically, this relief occurs quickly, but we always recommend true correction, meaning we want to see restoration in curvature of the spine to a degree where we are confident the sciatic nerve pain will not reoccur, which is all too common with sciatica-prone patients. If you are suffering from sciatica, call your chiropractor to get assessed. Our next post will cover how your low back can degenerate in the first place and what you can do to prevent it.
